MINERALS IN BIODIESEL BY EN 14538

Method reference EN 14538 is used to determine the combined concentration of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg), as well as the combined concentration of sodium (Na) and potassium (K), in biodiesel. EN 14538 is approved for use in the ASTM specification for biodiesel (B100), ASTM D6751-11b.

The presence of calcium and magnesium in B100, which may form abrasive solids, can result in excessive wear to vehicle injectors, fuel pumps, pistons, and rings. Calcium and magnesium may also be present as soluble metallic soaps in B100, which can contribute to filter plugging and engine deposits. As such, ASTM D6751 requires a maximum of 5ppm (m/m) combined calcium and magnesium in B100.

Likewise, sodium and potassium in B100 can form abrasive solids or soluble metallic soaps, with the same impact on vehicle components and performance as calcium and magnesium. ASTM D6751 requires a maximum of 5ppm (m/m) combined sodium and potassium in B100.

Procedures included on our A2LA Scope of Accredidation to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 are designated as such.
